Gurmat Sangeet: Bhai Davinder and Mohinder Partap Singh – entire collection

August 2, 2006

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! In my last post I spoke a little bit about the jatha of Bhai Mohinder and Davinder Partap Singh Ji. Amardeep ji gave me some information about them and I would like to share it with you.

Bhai Partap Singh, the father accompanied his three sons in this tour. He used to do keertan in Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib at Delhi before migrating to US with his sons. Now his son Bhai Davinder Partap Singh is the lead voice of the Jatha. In these recordings you can hear a shivering voice in the background and this is of their father Bhai Partap Singh.

They did keertan at Gurudwara Katong Sahib in Singapore for a whole week and the sangat consisted of barely 8-10 people on every day. One day I requested Bhai Sahib to play the Dilruba instead of the Violin (which he plays very well) and it was sad to hear him pour out his frustration at the attendance of sangat in Katong Gurudwara. His reply was that what difference would it make if he did play the Dilruba? After all the 8-10 who were regularly attending were already aware of Dilruba. I could understand his sense of frustration and agreed that I should only be a silent listener and enjoy the keertan the way they best felt to present.

Inspite of this frustration the jatha went on to sing their hearts out. In one of the tapes Bhai Mohinder Partap Singh Ji says it does not matter if people listen or not its our job to do kirtan the way the guru sahib has ordered us as we will continue to do so with his blessing.

In these recordings you will get a chance to listen to lovely puratan compositions. Some of them are played in the lesser know taals like Madh taal ( 9 beats), Char taal ki Savari( 11 beats), Jai taal( 13 beats) and Inder taal ( 19 beats). In addition to singing well, the jatha also made it a point to explain the shabad and the reet.

To download the collection please click here. Please download them and share them with the sangat.

  5. Frank Says:

Why is it all these Raggis are so worried about the turn out all the time? They say on the stages they are frustrated, but why – do they think the sangat needs to listen to them or that they have any giaan in front of Guru Jee. The Banee is of the Guru, the sangeet is of the Guru and Guru has given them human bodies. We and them should consider ourselves lucky to even have a place to sit in his holy presence.

It is solely a show they put on to wew the people. If there is piaar there is no worry about turn out. Little do they know that Sikhi is not a religion of quantity but quality. Keertan has to be sung to the Guru not the sangat. Then the Guru sends his blessings.

I find this is a serious problem amongst our Parachariks. We call them saying there is so much sangat, then they start counting the dollars and then get upset. We have cultivated such a culture that they become upset when they don’y have an audience or just leave.

I find the coments of the Raagi to be very egotistical and it shows a lack of understabding about Sikhi.

Guru Nanak did keertan out of mastee for God he didn’t check hoe many people were listening, it was only one or two and the keertan had an effect on there lives. Nowadays with all these huge darbars it seems it is just fanfare.

  6. Angad singh Says:

    Guru fateh Frank ji,

I agree with your point totally that the kirtaneeas should not be bothered by the absense of the sangat ..

However, I dont believe in berating them the way you have. Inspite of the frustrations they may have they still gave their best.

I can understand their frustrations cause behind those kirtaneaas is a man..its not cause of their own desires. If they wanted to be popular i am sure they could have but they dont bother, they are so low key that people have not even heard of them and if you hear the recordings you ll be certian that they sing with an amazing grace.

  7. Amardeep Singh Says:

    Frank,

We need to learn to show respect towards the rare Keertanias who have not waivered under the wave of commercialization. This Jatha did Keertan in Katong Gurudwara for 1 full week with sangat not going more than 8-10 in number but not on a single day did they compromise on their quality. Of the 8-10 people in the diwan, 4 of them comprised of my wife, myself and my 2 young daughters (10 and 5 at that time).

It’s inappropriate to presume they were egoistical and do not understand Sikhi especially since it appears you had not attended any of the diwans on these days. I attended every single day and can confirm they were very humble on all the days and made the best effort to make people aware of our rich heritage.

Please rise above the pettiness of finger pointing and learn to respect the ones who are doing their best to preserve our heritage. We need to encourage such people. No one, including yourself and myself is perfect. It’s not about individuals but about what the person is doing in his own way to protect the foundations of Sikhi.

    Regards
    Amardeep Singh

    Frank,
as you say “Guru Nanak did keertan out of mastee for God he didn’t check how many people were listening,”…… very true
Don’t forget that we are no where near him, we are humans.
We have to learn from him and it comes slowly, may take entire life time for that matter many many Janams to come somewhere near him.
It can only come by his grace not by our virtues….
    ‘cos we have none

    Gurfateh Veerji,

thanks for all the amazing seva you are doing in contributing to the preservation of gurmat sangeet recordings.

i don’t want to sound unappreciative, but i was wondering if/when you are going to upload the keertan from the raag darbar at rakab ganj (or was it another Gurdvara Sahib in delhi?).

    Thanks again.

    Gurfateh

  10. Angad Singh Says:

    Guru Fateh Hardeep Ji

I am glad you did download and listen to the kirtan.

As for the Rakab Ganj Sahib Recordings and other recordings I am currently working on where I should upload them so that the files are available for good. The server where I uploaded these files is for some reason not letting me upload anymore.

Once this is sorted out I shall start updating again.

  11. Amardeep Singh Says:

    Angad,

A correction in your posting. 9 Beat is Mat Taal and not Madh Taal. It goes as below.

Dha Dha Dhi Ta Kat Dha DhaDi NaDha TiNa
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

The first six Bols of Mat Taal are the same as the first six Bols of the Twelve Beat Soolfak Taal and the last three Bols of Matt Taal are basically the Dadra beat played in double spead, which results in 6 beat of Dadra becoming the three Beats under Mat Taal.

    regards
    Amardeep Singh

  12. A fan from afar Says:

    Dear Angad Ji,

This “jatha” is amazing. I have seen them/heard them for over 30 years and their hard work and dedication to keeping puratan sanget alive is simply Outstanding.

The “jatha” currently resides in Buffalo, NY, USA. It is Devinder Pratap Singh himself that plays the violin as they do kirtan. He switches between the vaja and violin. In addition, if I am not mistaken, I also believe that he also plays the rabab!!

You can view current pictures and kirtan of them on nanaksar.org (Kirtan Darbar 17th June). This is the first time I have seen them with their beards open.

Lastly, in response to Frank and the others, the reason that they were complaining about the sangat was quite frankly $$$$$. They are well known in this region for putting on ghazal perfomances in Atlantic City, NJ (Casinos and etc.) and other ‘mehfils” which has helped them to the luxurious lifestyle that they now live in.

As i stated earlier, their commitment to the puratan maryadha is great, however, it is one thing to be able to put on a performance, but a totally different thing to follow the Gurbani that is being sung.

  13. A fan from afar Says:

    Angad Ji,

Also, on nanaksar.org, they have kirtan of Bhai Gurmukh Singh, who is the son of a Bhai Bahadur Singh…a puratan ragi from the 60’s, 70’s.

They were a part of the Kirtan Darbar June 17

  14. satvinder Says:

Could it be that they were vexed at the turnout becasue they care about the propogation of Sikhi? With this in mind, maybe they were frustrated because the divaan was empty whilst maybe they knew of a Sikh population in the area?

I don’t know anything about the situation nor I do know them personally neither do I have a vested interest in defending or prosecuting (“,) Just trying to think laterally and trying to look for the positives.

Frank, just wanted to say… nice views about kirtan. About it being an offering to the divine as opposed to a performance. Really nice.

Also Amardeep singh ji’s statement… “We need to learn to show respect towards the rare Keertanias who have not waivered under the wave of commercialization”… was really nice.

from someone who knows nothing (“,)
