The Kirtaneeas of TODAY!

March 5, 2006

Guru Fateh!

All of us who are interested in learning/understanding and preserving Guru Mat Sangeet tend to focus a great deal on the kirtaneeas of the past like Bhai Samund Singh Ji, Bhai Santa Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi Ji, etc. Some may ask what is wrong with that. Nothing. Absolutely nothing is wrong with that provided we dont forget the Kirtaneeas of TODAY.

There are quite a few people doing their bit to preserve GuruMat Sangeet. Some have the opportunity to devote all their time and attention to this subject while there are others who have a professional career and Guru Mat Sangeet is their passion.

We are very fortunate to have had kirtaneeas who have been legends and we have a great deal to learn from them. They have done a tremendous job of writing down notations and explaing as much as they could have. However, as a result of this we tend to forget the kirtaneeas who are around today and are doing their bit to preserve Guru Mat Sangeet.

The past 70 or so years have seen the decline of Gurmat Sangeet. We are all aware of the reasons for the decline and I don’t intend to talk about that all over again. Today there are people who decided to brave the odds and learn kirtan and sing it the way the Guru Granth Sahib instructs us. I am going to do my bit to ensure they do not go un noticed.

Some of the Kirtaneeas of Today

Bhai Kawar Pal Singh

Bhai Rai Singh

Bhai Gupal Singh

Davinder and Mohinder Partap Singh

Chardi Kala Jatha

Prof. Surinder Singh

He has been very active in trying to establish Sikh music as a prominent art among the Sikhs and in academic circles both in the UK and abroad

Bhai Baldeep Singh

He is responsible for reviving the Taus and a significant part of the Jori tradition.

Bhai Kultar Singh

He is the son of Bhai Avtar Singh. He gave up his professional career to focus on GuruMat Sangeet. He accompanies his father.

These kirtaneeas are those who have devoted their lives to GuruMat Sangeet. There a lot of others who are doing all they can to understand and learn the correct way of doing kirtan. I think it our responsibility to give recogination to these kirtaneeas so that they are inspired to do more than jus their best.

Let us start by at least listening to them doing Kirtan. If we can we should aslo start inviting them over to our Gurudawaras so that the sangat out there realizes that kirtan is a LOT more than singing tunes borrowed from movie tracks and other songs in the 8 beat Kherwa Taal!

If I have missed out any names or if you know more about any of these kirtaneeas please let me know.

Guru Ang Sang

Angad Singh

I have not mentioned Bhai Avtar Singh Ji or Bhai Balbir Singh Ji or Bhai Amrik Singh Zakhmi on purpose cause I am confused as to which category do they belong to =p

How do you like Sant Anoop Singh’s kirtan?

  2. Sikhi Seeker Says:

You won’t blv this, and probably it is ‘cuz of my own ignorance, but I have NEVER attended a session in Toronto or anywhere for that matter, where Taus or other such sophisticated musical instruments are used. I just think I’d really like to though…hmm…:)

  3. Angad Singh Says:

Anoop Singh..sings movie tunes..and it happened in the guru ghar here that a kid got up and started to dance..the effect of his kirtan is very obvious..

Also there have been numerous ocassions where he has not sung the complete shabad..

Having said all this..i think my views of him are very obvious..

he claims he wants to get sangat to the guru ghar..and he does..but when they come here wht do they do..they go to a club to dance u dont come to gurughar.

  4. Malvinder Singh Says:

    Dont forget my favorites:

    Bhai Gurmeet Singh Ji Shaant
Bhai Nirmal Singh Ji (Darbar Sahib Wale)
    Bhai Sarabjit Singh Ji Rangila

and Bhai Jasbir Singh Ji (Paonta Sahib Wale) has his moments as well

    Guru Fateh Malvinder Singh Ji

Bhai Gurmeet Singh Shant does Kirtan in Nirdharit Raag but during his kirtan he uses excessive taans and alaaps. This is not permited. The singer is not supposed to show off his skills when doing kirtan. Same goes with Bhai Surjit Singh Long Island. That to me is indian classial and not gurmat sangeet

Nirmal Singh JI( i have not heard much of his kirtan. I you can give me a link I would be great ful)

Sarabjit Singh Rangila is a very well trained kirtana but he does at most one and at rare ocassions 2 shabads in the nirdharit raag rest of the shabdads in the diwan are all his own times movie tunes..that is why his name is not there..the same applies for Bhai Niranjan Singh ji..fortunately he is turniing towards nirdharit raag but there is still time

Jasbir Singh ponta shaib vale, I have not heard him

Now I have not included Sarab Jit singh ji and Niranjan Singh ji for the simple reason that they have givein in to the demand of the sangat and not the Guru. And seriously speaking it is more difficult to make a composition frm scratch once u stick to the nirdharit raag composing is so much easier.

    gur fateh ji,
you are so right, we all can at least make a beginning by listening to kirtan in its pure form, as it was meant to be, i also agree wholeheartedly that it is our responsibility to give recognition to these kirtaneeas…and waheguru, your knowledge seems to be quite vast, yes anoop singh and many others sing filmi tunes, good to see that you have given your viewpoint boldly…and i also don’t understand why he is called a “sant”, at least as per my understanding a sant is an enlightened one…who has attained…i mean no disrespect…but is he really a sant??

  7. Angad Singh Says:

On the point of Sant All Id like to say is..look at puratan Gur Sikhs

5 payere were all addressed as Bahi not Sant. Also we have Bhai Mani Singh, Bhai Randhir Singh, Bhai Santa Singh, Bhai Samund Singh,..these people served the panth in may ways..and no one ever called them Sant and they did not allow it.

In contrast in every other pind u have Babas and Sants and Maharaj and these guys are like wht 20 to 30 yr olds..

I mean recall the Sakhi of Baba Bakala..they true Sant will never go tooting the horn saying he is Sant..

so is he really sant..i dunno..and i dont care about him either..i care about wht my guru has to say cause i am answerable to him and not to anyone else..

  8. Harpreet Kaur Says:

I think as people, we are always trying to find the easy way to get to things, the path that requires the least work. So many people are impatient, don’t want to put in their own devotion, and lack the faith that they are equals amongst all in God’s eyes. For some reason they think their Ardas is not good enough, they think these “sadhs” have more “kamayiii” so instead of trying to put time into furthering their own spiritual lives, they rely on the self proclaimed spirituuality of these “sadhs” and treat them as a mediator between themselves and God. People these days are blind to their own power, abilities, and worth.

It just doesn’t make sense to me. I sometimes drive myself crazy thinking about it, even though so many of them have been exposed, why do you still blindly “matha tek” to these “sadhs”?!?!?! But I’ve realized that it’s a whole propaganda process intiated by the “sadhs” themselves. Most of them while on stage, don’t tell you to do what you’re suppose to i.e. don’t believe in “sants”, respect everyone equally, the only guide you need is the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Instead they tell you “sakhis” about so called devoted people who went to such and such a baba and because of their devotion and sewa (all sewa and devotion directed towards the baba) they became well off, were blessed with a son..etc, etc. So do you see how even their kathas are oriented around getting you to believe in “sants”! They relate the people’s problems to situations of characters in their sakhis and provide the solution in serving “sants” and of course they know very well that even if they themselves don’t, the secretary at the Gurdwara Sahib will announce them as “sant and so” the very next day before their katha. I don’t know maybe I’m just crazy and over-critical, reading too much into these things..what do you think?

There are definitely sants in this world, they just aren’t called sants. A person who demands/expects more respect than others can never be called a sant, because it’s going against the very principles of their jeevan. Sants consider themselves to be the lowest of all people and they act accordingly; doing sewa of others, instead of having their own sewa done by people while they sit on a platform. Instead of looking for sants to dispell our problems, maybe we should all try to acquire some of their charcteristics (a True Sant’s charcteristics as outlined in SGGS) on our part and pray to Waheguru Ji with the faith that our Ardas will be heard if it comes from a pure heart.
